    Box Breathing, also known as sama vritti pranayama, comes from the ancient yogic practice of pranayama — the art of focusing the breath to regulate energy and calm the mind. It’s been used for centuries to restore harmony between body and spirit, and today it’s trusted by mindfulness teachers, therapists, and even the U.S. Navy SEALs for its ability to restore focus under pressure.

    This pattern of slow, equal breathing helps activate your parasympathetic nervous system — the part of your body responsible for rest, digestion, and recovery. By shifting out of the stress-driven “fight or flight” state, your body begins to release tension, lower cortisol, and restore balance to your heart rate and blood pressure.

    By balancing the length of your inhale, hold, and exhale, it gently lowers heart rate, stabilizes oxygen and CO₂ levels, and promotes clarity and calm. The act of counting also gives your mind something soft to rest on — a quiet mantra that anchors you in the present moment.
